Founding and early years
PERKOBP began in early 1992 as a family support group formed by parents concerned about the care and future of their children with learning difficulties. The group met regularly to share experiences and support one another, and on 20 November 1993 it was officially registered as a society with the Registrar of Societies (ROS), Malaysia.
Honouring Our Founders and Pioneers
PERKOBP began with a small group of dedicated individuals who believed in creating opportunities for persons with learning difficulties. Their vision and commitment continue to guide our work today.
Establishing training programmes
In September 1994 PERKOBP launched its Employment Training Centre (ETC) with the help of Malaysian CARE, to provide vocational training and job readiness skills. The ETC began small — operating from a private residence with a handful of trainees — and expanded over the years to purpose-designed premises offering daily, structured training in tasks such as packing, labelling and basic production workflows.
Growth of premises and services
- 1995: Relocated to a larger facility in the Puchong light industrial area, 6 1/2 miles, Jalan Puchong, with initial funding support from Yayasan Kebajikan Negara for equipment and furnishings. PERKOBP operated at this premise until mid 2010.
- 2009: Acquired a ¾-acre parcel of land in Kampung Tengah, Puchong. Construction of a sheltered workshop building commenced in 2010. The project faced regulatory delays, but the building was completed in 2016.
- 2010: PERKOBP relocated its operation to a rented shoplot in Taman Puncak Jalil.
- 2012: PERKOBP acquired its own double storey shop lot in Bandar Kinrara (BK1) and operated there until early 2024.
- May 2023: The Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) for the Kg Tengah building was obtained; And a Kg Tengah branch was established with a new group of parents.
- March 2024: PERKOBP consolidated all sheltered workshop operations at the Kg Tengah premises.
